The oldest male gorilla in the world, Ozzie, is no more. The lowland gorilla died at the age of 61, the Atlanta Zoo in the US state of Georgia announced on Tuesday.

The great ape was found dead by its caretakers. In the wild, gorillas live up to 40 years, in a zoo it can be up to 50 years. The oldest gorilla in the world, a female named Fatou, who is 64 years old, lives in the Berlin zoo.

In the past year, Ozzie tested positive for corona. He showed mild symptoms.

Western lowland gorillas are in danger of extinction. Ozzie was already doing his best. He leaves behind children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who live at Zoo Atlanta and other zoos in the US and Canada. “Our hearts are broken. A legend is no more,” the zoo tweeted.
