World Cup in Veysonnaz: next top place for ski crosser Wilmsmann

After silver at the World Championships, Florian Wilmsmann also did well in the World Cup: the German reached the final in Veysonnaz, but ultimately had to settle for fourth place.

Towards the end of the season, Upper Bavarian Florian Wilmsmann is getting stronger and stronger in ski cross. After his World Cup silver coup from Bakuriani/Georgia, he also made it into the final in Veysonnaz in Switzerland on Sunday (March 12, 2023), but in the end had to settle for fourth place. In 2021 he was still able to win in Veysonnaz.

At the penultimate World Cup stop of the winter, Swede David Mobaerg secured victory ahead of Japanese Ryo Sugai and overall World Cup leader Reece Howden (Canada). Wilmsmann from TSV Hartpenning finished last in the final. In the women’s race, the Swiss Fanny Smith won ahead of the French Jade Grillet Abuert and the Canadian Tiana Gairns.

Wilmsmann aims for first overall World Cup podium

In the well-balanced German team, it was Wilmsmann, the strongest driver for years, who was able to set an exclamation mark again after winning the World Championship two weeks ago. After this success, he could end up on the podium for the first time in the overall World Cup. The decision will be made next weekend when the ski crossers compete in their World Cup finals in Craigleith/Canada (March 18, from 8 p.m. in the sports show live stream).

Races on Saturday had to be cancelled

However, the remaining German men did not make it into the last eight on Sunday: Florian Fischer and Tim Hronek were eliminated in the round of 16, Daniel Bohnacker’s path ended in the quarterfinals.

In the past few days it had snowed heavily in Veysonnaz, no races could take place on Friday and Saturday, and the women’s and men’s races on Saturday were cancelled. The next day, however, the implementation went smoothly, the sun was shining in the Swiss mountains.

Skicrosser Florian Wilmsmann surprisingly won silver at the World Championships. Surprise World Champion was Simone Deromedis. Sara Näslund prevailed in the women’s category.

Holzmann fails in the round of 16

In the women’s category, the only starter, Johanna Holzmann, did not make it into the quarter-finals. For the Olympic bronze medalist in 2022, Daniela Maier, the season has already ended after an operation on her knee.
