Winter Games in Beijing – figure skating icon Witt: “It won’t be a carefree party”

Beijing (dpa) – Figure skating icon Katarina Witt is not expecting any brilliant winter games in Beijing due to the massive corona restrictions.

“It won’t be a really happy and carefree party,” said the 56-year-old double Olympic champion from 1984 and 1988 to the German Press Agency. “The athletes have to accept it as it is.”

The good thing is that everyone has the same conditions, which makes it fair again. “Now those who are mentally able to get through the whole thing the best and are lucky enough that the virus doesn’t dock on to them will assert themselves,” said Witt. “For the athletes, it will be limited to one fly there and one fly home.”

The Berliner by choice regrets that the athletes “are deprived of the unforgettable experience of experiencing an exuberant and happy Olympic festival of world youth”.
