Will Werder Bremen strike at ex-Spurs professional Kallum Cesay?

Werder Bremen is taking unusual paths in its search for further reinforcements for the defense. Although the transfer window has already closed, the Green-Whites could still sign a right-back in the person of Kallum Cesay, as the 21-year-old is currently without a club – and is already in Bremen. Does a commitment work?

Kallum Cesay is a four-time international for Sierra Leone and played in games for his home country as a defensive midfielder, in left midfield and as a right-back. He even scored two goals in his national uniform. But Cesay has been without an employer since the beginning of July 2023. His contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired and was not renewed.

The 1.89 meter tall defender had played there since his youth and most recently worked for the Premier League representative’s U21 team. But now Cesay has made his way to the Weser. He has been training in Bremen since Monday and has to and wants to prove himself in order to get a chance in the Bundesliga.

“We’ve known him for a long time. He was offered to us and the international break is now a good fit for it,” said head coach Clemens Fritz about the experiment with the London-born 21-year-old to “Bild” and added: “Kallum is a young player, who enjoyed a very good education at Tottenham. He can be used flexibly and can play several positions.”

At Werder, Cesay would most likely be deployed on the right side of defense, because that’s exactly where the problem is. In Mitchel Weiser there is only one veteran there – who has already been set back by injuries. So will Bremen take action immediately?

“The plan is for the player to train with us for the next few days. Then we’ll see what happens next,” said Fritz and remained cautious about the right-footer: “A decision is not yet in sight. It can go both ways go.”

As a player without a club, Cesay would be available for free; Werder would “only” have to cover the Sierra Leonean’s salary.
