To solve these doubts, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has published a series of tips and recommendations on what to do if a Ryanair flight is cancelled. We tell you what they are:

Airlines are protected by the community regulation, which allows them to allege a series of reasons for not compensating passengers in the event of a flight cancellation. For example, if the cweather conditions are unfavorable, there is a security risk or in cases of force majeure.

However, when the cancellation of the flight is due to an announced and confirmed strike, the airline must compensate passengers and take measures to alleviate the inconvenience that entails said cancellation. In fact, the European High Court of Justice made it clear a few years ago that a strike, whether legal or illegal (wildcat strike), is not a cause of force majeure, so in this case they must also compensate customers.

What are my rights if my flight is cancelled?

If your flight is canceled due to the Ryanair strike, You will be entitled to automatic compensation. Also, you can ask for compensation and claim demonstrable damages, such as the loss of your vacation or hotel. These are the compensations in each case:

  • If the cancellation is made for a trip scheduled for two weeks or more, Ryanair will be obliged to reimburse you for the amount of the ticket.
  • If you are notified of the cancellation between 14 and 7 days before the scheduled departure time, you will be entitled to automatic compensation if you are not offered alternative transport that allows you to depart no more than two hours before the scheduled departure and allows you to reach your final destination less than 4 hours late compared to the scheduled time.
  • If he flight cancellation notice occurs less than 7 days in advance, You are entitled to automatic compensation unless you are offered to take another flight that departs no more than one hour before the scheduled time, and arrive at your destination less than 2 hours late.

The amount of compensation is variable depending on the type of flight and the destination, these are some examples of automatic compensation:

  • €250 compensation for canceled flights of up to 1,500 kilometers, which becomes 125 euros if they offer you to travel with a delay of no more than 2 hours.
  • €400 compensation if it is an intra-community trip of more than 1,500 km, and for other canceled flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km. (200 if they offer you a solution to travel to the destination with a delay of no more than 3 hours).
  • 600 euros of compensationn in the case of journeys of more than 3,500 km (300 euros if they offer you to travel to your destination with a delay of no more than 4 hours).
