The new performance that will take place in Melbourne, in the week preceding the next Australian Open, is called “Million Dollar 1 Point. A new mini tournament where the protagonists will not only be the big names of the male circuit. Carlos Alcaraz, the first tennis player confirmed by the Australian Slam Director Craig Tiley, will guide a group of 22 professionals who will have to compete, in the final stages of the tournament, against ten amateurs from all over the country. Anyone can register and above all anyone who has the opportunity to take home a rich prize pool: in fact, there is 1 million Australian dollars at stake (about 600 thousand euros).

the format

This experiment had already been implemented this year: some amateurs defeated more quoted opponents, but to win in the end it was the Australian professional Omar Jasika. In January, therefore, names such as that of Alcaraz were not involved and the figure that could be won was not so high. In 2026, however, the performance tournament will change and expand. He will be part of the Open Open Open week and will work as a normal direct elimination scoreboard. It starts with “stone, paper, scissors” to determine who will serve or receive. Those who win the point will win the game and move on to the next round, while those who lose will be eliminated from the tournament. The qualifications will take place in all of Australia and Melbourne Park during the opening week, while for the final there will be the great stage to wait for them: the challenge will be staged, in fact, on the Rod Laver Arena. Carlos Alcaraz will not be the only top player present: “Other big names will be announced shortly, now you have a million reasons to take a racket and prepare for January”, promises Craig Tiley.
