Werder Bremen rolls over Schalke 04 – HSV back in the promotion race

Kiel 1:1 against Heidenheim

SV Werder Bremen has impressively ended the winning streak of leaders FC Schalke 04 and has taken the lead in the Bundesliga 2. The North Germans, who have not been defeated for six games, won the top game in the Veltins Arena 4-1 (2-0) on Saturday and are in first place with 57 points three rounds before the end of the season, ahead of the Revierelf, who are second with 56 points. Hamburger SV has retained its theoretical chances of promotion with the 4-2 win at Jahn Regensburg.

Holstein Kiel had to settle for a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Heidenheim. A decision in the relegation battle was made on Friday evening. FC Ingolstadt 04 is the first to be relegated after the 2-2 draw at Karlsruher SC.

Werder Bremen rolls over Schalke 04 and takes the lead in the table

FC Schalke missed another big step towards resurgence and lost the lead in the table to Werder Bremen. With the clear 1: 4 (0: 2) against the previous pursuer from northern Germany, the royal blue flight with the last five wins in a row came to an abrupt end. In front of 62,271 fans in the Veltins Arena, which was sold out for the first time in over two years, the goalscorers Ilia Gruev (9th minute), Niclas Füllkrug (26th) and Marvin Ducksch (51st/53rd) ensured the deserved victory for Bremen, who after previously found three draws back on the road to success.

On the other hand, Schalke suffered their first defeat since interim coach Mike Büskens took office at the beginning of March, despite Simon Terodde’s consolation goal (88′). This means that Bremen, who are now one point better, have passed the table and are going into the last three games of the season as promotion favorites.

The loud support from the full ranks seemed to inhibit Schalke more than inspire it. After just a few minutes, there was the first sensitive damper. After a long-range shot by Mitchell Weiser, which was poorly parried by goalkeeper Martin Fraisl, Gruev headed in from close range. That gave the guests more security, whose lead was only threatened if Terodde (21st) had a chance. Before half-time, they struck again, ice-cold. The preparatory work to make it 2-0 was again done by Weiser, who served Füllkrug with a cross in an exemplary manner.

Despite major personnel problems, especially on the defensive, the Werder goal was rarely really in danger even after the restart. Bremen were already close to 3-0 with a free kick from Ducksch (48 ‘) on the post. Only a little later, the attacker made the preliminary decision with a double strike within three minutes.

After winning in Regensburg, HSV still hopes for promotion

Hamburger SV has retained its minimum chance in the promotion race. The North Germans won 4-2 (1-0) at Jahn Regensburg and moved closer to the leading group. Coach Tim Walter’s team reduced the gap to second direct promotion place to five points three games before the end of the season.

The Hamburg goals were scored by Miro Muheim with a powerful shot from 20 meters into the top right corner (23rd minute), Anssi Suhonen from distance (66th), Josha Vagnoman (90th) and David Kinsombi (90th + 6) from the penalty spot . At Regensburg, Carlo Boukhalfa scored after a misplay by HSV full-back Moritz Heyer (46′) and Andreas Albers from the penalty spot (89′).

At the beginning, Regensburg surprised the favored guests with high pressing and hardly let them come out of their half. After 15 minutes there were 9:3 shots on goal for the strong hosts. But HSV took the lead out of nowhere. The hosts then relaxed the pressing. From then on, Hamburg found their way into the game better, but after SSV Jahn equalized, they needed some time to pull themselves together. The final phase of the game with two penalties was turbulent.

After four draws and one win, Regensburg suffered a defeat again. However, before the last three games, they are nine points ahead of the relegation place.

Only 1: 1 in Kiel: Heidenheim hardly any chance of promotion

1. FC Heidenheim has little chance of promotion. Coach Frank Schmidt’s team couldn’t get past a 1-1 (0-0) draw at Holstein Kiel. This puts Heidenheim seventh in the table with three games to go, seven points behind third FC St. Pauli, who also played one game less.

Kiel can also plan for another season in the 2nd Bundesliga. With a nine-point lead over the relegation rank, the North Germans are only one point away from staying safely in the class. In front of 10,445 fans in the Holstein Stadium, Simon Lorenz (56th minute) gave Holstein the lead, which Tim Kleindienst (70th) was able to level.

The first excitement of the game came in the ninth minute when Robert Leipertz shot in to put FCH in the lead. After the intervention of the video referee, referee Robert Hartmann rightly retracted the goal due to Patrick Mainka being offside. After that Kiel dominated, but Kwasi Wriedt (21st/34th) and Fabian Reese (38th) could not overcome keeper Kevin Müller with good chances.

The visitors were more active after the break, but were suddenly behind when man-marker Lorenz Lewis headed in Holtby’s cross to score his first goal of the season. Heidenheim’s coach Schmidt brought three fresh offensive forces into the match and was rewarded. However, KSV keeper Ioannis Gelios Kleindienst’s shot for his tenth goal of the season slipped into the net under his body. In the end, the draw was overall performance-based.
