Washing duvet in the washing machine: how to do it

THE Are the duvets machine washable? It is a more than legitimate question in winter when you want to refresh your outerwear without necessarily taking it to the dry cleaners. However, it is essential to read the label first and then distinguish those with synthetic padding from those in feather, more delicate. It is important, in fact, in the cases of real down, that these do not lose elasticity, shape and softness.

Washing a duvet in the washing machine, the basic rules

Before putting the jacket in the washing machine, you have to make sure that there is the symbol on the label then, after having emptied the pockets and eliminated the fur parts (which must be washed separately), we proceed to remove any stains with a hand wash. The most stubborn ones, in fact, must be pre-treated with a specific stain remover or with the classic Marseille soap and must be rubbed on the dry garment and left to act for a few minutes, then rinsed.

At this point the duvet can be put in the washing machine. Unless the specific program is present, the recommended one is the most delicate at a temperature of 30 ° C and without spinning, precisely to avoid any problems with the jacket itself and its padding. Do not underestimate the detergent: for delicates and without softener. A trick: if you wash it alone, it is better to add towels or 3-4 tennis balls together so that the feathers inside will avoid forming lumps in the fabric.

How to dry (and inflate) the washed duvet

Once washed, the duvet must be placed horizontally on the drying rack, near but not on top of a heat source. If it is summer, it is better to dry it in the open air but not directly in contact with the sun. Avoid the dryer so as not to damage the outer fabric and the inner lining.

Once completely dried, it is necessary to “rearrange” the internal feathers. First of all, the jacket must be shaken vigorously to redistribute them, then “massaged” so as to avoid lumps, especially in conjunction with seams, cuffs and hoods. In the end, leave it in the open air so that the feather inside can regain its shape and volume. Only after this step put it back in the cupboard, otherwise the padding remains crushed.

Can the duvet be hand washed?

Sure, but it’s more time-consuming and labor-intensive, though guarantees excellent results. In addition, it takes much longer to dry, so it is better to reserve it for the hottest days.

In this case, lukewarm water is used where a measuring cup of baking soda or a glass of apple cider vinegar is diluted. And then, the garment is immersed and left to soak for two hours. After that, it is rinsed by removing all the detergent. Fill the tub again adding this time the avocado oil which helps to soften the fabric, leaving it to soak for about half an hour. Once the feathers have been squeezed and rearranged, they must be dried, warm but away from the sun.
