Warning strike by Lufthansa ground staff leads to many flight cancellations

FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – A two-day warning strike by Lufthansa ground staff will lead to numerous flight cancellations on Thursday and Friday. The Verdi union has called for the strike. It begins on Thursday at 4:00 a.m. and is scheduled to end on Saturday morning at 7:10 a.m. Employees in Lufthansa’s technology, logistics and training departments wanted to stop work on Wednesday evening – without any consequences for passengers.

Aviation security controllers also wanted to go on warning strike at the airports in Frankfurt and Hamburg. This means that passengers cannot fly from these two airports on Thursday – unless they just change there.

At Lufthansa alone, around 1,000 flights are canceled per strike day. The flight program on Thursday and Friday should include around 10 to 20 percent of the originally planned volume.

With the fifth warning strike in this collective bargaining dispute, Verdi wants to force major concessions from management for around 25,000 ground staff. The negotiations with private aviation security companies also involve around 25,000 people./brd/DP/jha
