At the end of December, Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine, a substance that is on the list of banned substances in sports. The result was only announced the day after she helped her country to Olympic team gold in Beijing. Despite objections from the International Olympic Committee, the international sports tribunal CAS ruled that she could stay in Beijing.

The 15-year-old Valieva is already the leading lady of international figure skating at a young age and holds the world records in the short freestyle (90.45), free freestyle (185.29) and the combined score (272.71 ). She became the first woman to make quadruple jumps at the Games in Beijing.
