It is now clear which major tours Jonas Vingegaard will be taking part in this year. The plan: The historic double is to come.

Cycling star Jonas Vingegaard is hoping for a double coup. Just like his eternal rival Tadej Pogacar, he will attack first at the Giro d’Italia and then at the Tour de France. The Dane confirmed this in his training camp in Spain.

Vingegaard will even make his debut at the Giro. The Tour of Italy starts this year on May 8th in Bulgaria. In July he wants to finally dethrone his Slovenian opponent at the Tour de France.

In 2025, cycling dominator Pogacar became the first professional cyclist in 26 years to win the double from the two most important national tours. He was only the eighth driver to achieve this.

“I’ve been thinking about the Giro for a while. It’s one of the biggest races on the calendar and I’ve never ridden it before,” said Vingegaard about the new challenge. “Winning the Vuelta last year gave me even more motivation to go all-in for the overall victory in Italy. I would like to have the pink jersey in my collection.”

About the Giro to Tour victory?

His sports director Grischa Niermann emphasized that the Tour of Italy can help Vingegaard get in shape for the highlight of the year. “We are convinced that taking part in the Giro will be good for his level in the Tour,” said the German former professional.

Although overall victory at the Giro is also in sight, the main goal is still a triumph at the Tour de France. Vingegaard won the Tour of France in 2022 and 2023. Since then, Pogacar has dominated.

With a Giro victory, Vingegaard would even complete the triple. In addition to the Tour, he has also already won the Spanish Vuelta. A title that Pogacar still lacks. “That obviously played a role in my decision,” said Vingegaard.

Most recently, the Briton Christopher Froome completed the Grand Tour triple in 2018. No rider has ever achieved a triple triumph of victories at the Giro, Tour and Vuelta in one year.
