She controlled her weight in an ‘incredibly unhealthy way’, and at some point she no longer liked herself and her body: In the three-part series, which was released on Netflix, fashion designer and ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham (51) gives intimate insights into her experiences with harsh criticism of her body – and reports how much this has burdened her.
According to the PA news agency, Beckham and her husband David (50) remember the moment when she was weighed on television six months after the birth of her son Brooklyn. Back then she was “very, very young,” says Beckham, “and that hurts.” At some point she began to doubt herself and her appearance, “because I let it get to me, I no longer knew what I saw when I looked in the mirror,” she said.
She couldn’t control what was written about her or what photos were taken of her – and ultimately tried to compensate for this by controlling her weight and her clothing. “I was able to control my weight and I did it in an incredibly unhealthy way,” she says, according to PA. It’s really hard to constantly hear that you’re not good enough.
David Beckham: “My Victoria” disappeared at some point
This also influenced the family’s life, as David Beckham also reported in the series, according to PA. The Victoria he knew, “my Victoria”, began to disappear at some point – “just because of the criticism she had to take. People thought it was okay to criticize a woman for her weight, for what she does, for what she wears,” said the 50-year-old.
In three parts, according to PA, the series examines Victoria Beckham’s early life as a businesswoman and tells of her career with the Spice Girls. The focus is also on preparations for a fashion show during Paris Fashion Week. On Wednesday evening, Beckham celebrated the premiere in London with her family.
