VfL Wolfsburg will probably follow suit for Lovro Majer – Stade Rennes rejects

Inter too?

At the beginning of July it became known that VfL Wolfsburg and Bayer 04 Leverkusen were courting midfielder Lovro Majer. And the “Wolves” are now apparently serious about the race for the Croatian, who was one of the long-running favorites at Stade Rennes last season. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano last year’s table night in the Bundesliga improved his offer and offered 18 million euros plus bonuses.

The Wolfsburg would put together an overall package that should be expensive in total up to 25 million euros – including a resale participation. However, the Ligue 1 club refused. According to the portal “Football Transfers” if the transfer fee is 30 million euros, you could meet at 5 million euros less. The reports do not indicate whether Bayer is still in the running. According to reports, Inter Milan has expressed an interest.

Majer contributed three goals and seven assists in 42 appearances in 2022/23. The national player moved from GNK Dinamo Zagreb to Rennes in 2021 for 12 million euros, where he increased his market value to currently 20 million euros. At the end of October, Majer extended his contract, which originally ran until 2026, by another year and announced that he wanted to “continue to grow with the club”. Now a change could become concrete, especially because Rennes has signed the commitments of Enzo Le Fée (was also traded at BVB) and Ludovic Blas for midfield.

Should Wolfsburg ultimately pay (at least) 25 million euros, Majer would be the third most expensive purchase in the club’s history – behind leaders Julian Draxler and André Schürrle. The Bundesliga has so far spent €29m on new players during this transfer window. Meanwhile, Stade Rennes has received €25 million plus x for five departures in its history. “Majer has the greatest market potential in the Rennes midfield, so it’s logical that given the two signings, he’s the main contender for a departure,” Ronan Caroff, Area Manager France, told Transfermarkt. Majer showed a “high level” during his time in Rennes, especially in the first season in which he scored 15 goals in 36 games – as an “eighth” mind you.
