A few days after VfL Wolfsburg fired coach Paul Simonis as a result of the 2-1 loss in Bremen, sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz also had to leave. The search for a successor to Schindzielorz is in full swing and according to a “Kicker” report, Hoffenheim’s Andreas Schicker is very popular with the Lower Saxony team.
Schicker moved from Sturm Graz to TSG in October 2024 and took over the position of Managing Director of Sports. Although things are going well for the Kraichgauer team with sixth place, there are rumblings in the club. Due to internal power struggles with patron Dietmar Hopp and player agent Roger Wittmann, Schicker’s fellow managing directors Markus Schütz and Frank Briel had to leave the club. What will happen next in Hoffenheim and who the 39-year-old Austrian will have to work with is still uncertain.
Schindzielorz had been in office since February 2023. In Wolfsburg, his downfall was primarily the squad planning, for which he was responsible together with the Dane Peter Christiansen. During his tenure, Wolfsburg invested 162 million euros in new additions and received 135 million euros for departures. Twelfth, eleventh and now 14th place in the Bundesliga are a disappointing result given the financial possibilities. During the big change this summer, the duo made mistakes and the VfL squad appears unbalanced.
Schicker was also linked with a return to Austria to RB Salzburg, where he was supposed to replace Rouven Schröder, who had moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach (to the article). According to “Kicker”, talks with the Wolfsburg team are scheduled for next week.
