The separation of the long-time DFB professional from his wife Lisa is making headlines. However, Thomas Müller joins a strange series – because several of his companions have had similar personal changes. An overview.
Thomas and Lisa Müller have separated. The news caused a stir on Wednesday evening. After 17 years, the couple’s marriage is apparently over, as the couple’s media lawyer explained in “Bild”.
But Thomas Müller is not the only former German international whose marriage failed. One fact is even more striking: the 36-year-old is the next member of the German national team that won the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in 2014 to have mutually decided to separate with his wife. He’s even the seventh.

Thomas Müller’s marriage ends – several high-profile separations
After the tournament in Brazil in 2014, several of the world champions’ prominent relationships broke up.
Manuel Neuer: The goalkeeper was in a relationship with Kathrin Gilch from 2009 to 2014 and met Nina Weiß in August of that year, whom he married three years later. The couple separated in 2020. In 2023, Neuer entered into his second marriage, marrying the handball player Anika Bissel in Tegernsee. The following year the two became parents to a son and the couple is currently expecting their second child.
Mats Hummels: The defender and his long-time partner Cathy Fischer married in 2015, and the couple became parents to their son Ludwig in 2018. The two separated in 2021 and divorced at the end of 2022. Hummels has been in a relationship with model Nicola Cavanis since the end of 2023.
Sami Khedira: The midfielder lived with model Lena Gercke from 2011 to 2015. He announced their separation in July 2015. The current TV expert for the streaming service DAZN is now dating former national team player Melanie Leupolz, with whom he has a son born in 2022.
