In Gieten there is renewed interest in the discussion about a multifunctional or cultural center. In the new coalition agreement of Aa and Hunze, the coalition parties Gemeentebelangen, VVD and CDA opt for a different approach: education and culture are no longer together in one building, but each have their own place.
This means that previous plans for a joint center are fading into the background. At the same time, a new search begins for what both facilities should look like in the future.
The municipality wants to investigate whether the De Wendeling sports hall, on the Boddeveld, can provide multifunctional accommodation for culture and associations. In 2021, De Wendeling was also in the picture as a possible location for the new center to be built, but that was canceled after a feasibility study identified De Goorns sports hall as the ideal location. At the same time, the coalition agreement states that it will be examined which functions the building should have, and what that will cost.
It is striking that education is no longer part of those plans. For the Dr. Nassau College, the only high school in the village, is looking at expanding at its current location on Stokleggingslaan. Until then, temporary housing must offer a solution. This includes looking at possibilities at the library at the De Goorns sports hall.
The new course represents a clear break with previous plans, in which school and culture would come together under one roof.
It has been established for years that there is a need for a cultural center in Gieten. Associations have been indicating for a long time that they lack space to rehearse, perform and organize activities.
An initial plan was to build an education and culture center at the Dr. Nassau College. This met with resistance from local residents, who were concerned about, among other things, traffic and parking pressure in the neighborhood.
Then De Goorns sports park came into the picture. A multifunctional center would be built there with space for both culture and education. That plan again caused discussion, because a football field would disappear. Earlier this year, a majority of the municipal council therefore rejected the proposal.
In the meantime, the lack of space at the Dr. Nassau College a concern. The number of students has been growing faster than previously expected for years. Last year, the school announced that the number of students would increase from 377 to 440 students.
To accommodate this growth, temporary classrooms have been installed in recent years. According to director Richard Gerding, these provide relief for the time being, but a permanent solution is desperately needed. He previously stated that the school cannot remain dependent on emergency facilities indefinitely.
With the new coalition agreement, another direction is once again on the table, but many questions still remain unanswered. The municipality wants to investigate whether De Wendeling is suitable as a location for a cultural center. At the same time, it must become clear how expansion of the Dr. Nassau College could look like on the existing school grounds.
What this will cost, exactly how much space is available and when the plans can be implemented remains to be seen in the near future.
The discussion about a cultural center has occupied Gieten for years now. Everyone seems to agree on one thing: both the associations and the school need more space, and it is a shame that the largest village in the municipality has no place where people can meet.
Where that space will ultimately be located and how quickly the plans will become reality is still uncertain. For the time being, the new coalition agreement mainly means that new research is being conducted and that the final chapter in this file has not yet been written.
