VfL crisis: decision on Schmadtke contract postponed

Wolfsburg (dpa) – The sporting crisis at VfL Wolfsburg has also postponed the decision on the planned extension of the contract with managing director Jörg Schmadtke.

Basically, the supervisory board and head of sport have repeatedly signaled their interest in continuing the cooperation beyond the summer at the end of 2021. However, the chairman of the supervisory board, Frank Witter, said on Thursday in a media round with journalists from Wolfsburg: “The crisis has had a massive impact on the question of priorities and timing.” He could not “finally answer the question about Schmadtke’s future. Our priority is now clearly on the sporty side, which occupies us all day and night.”

Great success is followed by use

The 57-year-old Schmadtke moved to Wolfsburg in 2018 as Managing Director Sport. His contract with VfL expires at the end of this season. For three years, the almost relegated team in 2017 and 2018 had great success under Schmadtke and sports director Marcel Schäfer, which culminated in qualifying for the Champions League last summer. In the current season, however, the club has slipped into the relegation battle of the Bundesliga due to Schmadtke’s mistakes in squad planning and the commitment of coach Mark van Bommel.

“Of course we have to take the current situation into account. You can’t live in the past forever and only enjoy fourth place last season,” said Witter. “We have to ask ourselves why the team hasn’t been able to do what we and many others have given them credit for. That too is part of a sensible analysis.” On the other hand, “you can’t hide the successes. We’ll definitely put a button on it in the next few weeks. In one direction or the other.”
