VfB Stuttgart: Clarification of Mislintat future after transfer phase – announcement of changes

No external sports director

CEO Alexander Wehrle from VfB Stuttgart wants to clarify the future of sports director Sven Mislintat after the current transfer phase. “We said from the start that we have a relatively demanding transfer period ahead of us and that we will focus everything on that during this time,” said the 47-year-old at the training camp in Weiler-Simmerberg on Friday. “When the transfer period is over, we will deal with Sven’s contract and maybe add one or the other topic for the new season.” The sports director’s contract is still valid for one year.

Mislintat joined VfB in April 2019. Since then he has signed players for €60.75 million, compared to sales for €129.4 million. Among other things, he was responsible for the million-dollar departures of Benjamin Pavard (for 35 million euros to FC Bayern) and Nicolás González (for 24.5 million euros to AC Florenz).

“Under no circumstances will we implement an external sports director,” Wehrle continued. The supervisory board sees it the same way he does. Wehrle returned to Stuttgart from 1. FC Köln in the spring and took over the posts of chairman of the board and sports director from his predecessor Thomas Hitzlsperger. He left open whether he would keep the dual role in the future.

Wehrle announces further transfers at VfB Stuttgart

In addition, the CEO (quoted via “picture“) further changes. “With Vagnoman and Perea we made transfers without selling players. This shows that we are economically viable. If nothing else happens, we’ll start the new season with a very strong team. But it is clear that there is still a lot to do.” Fees of EUR 6.1 million were due for the two professionals. Another €3.8m was added for the permanent signings of central defenders Konstantinos Mavropanos and Hiroki Ito (see statistics).

Last season, VfB had to tremble about staying in the Bundesliga until the last matchday. Therefore, for 2022/23, according to Wehrle, “the clear goal (…) is to stay in the league. With Schalke and Bremen, two traditional clubs will be added, and these will be intense games. Last year in Cologne I saw what it takes to survive a difficult situation. That will give us an emotional boost.”
