Ventilus: Vlaams Belang submits motion for underground pipes
Ventilus is a new high-voltage line across West Flanders that was announced in 2019. It is intended to bring the green electricity from the many windmills at sea to the interior, especially now that a second windmill park is planned off the coast of De Panne. The current high-voltage network is not sufficient for this. In September, the Flemish Government will decide whether Ventilus will be built underground or above ground.
“Must go underground”
“From the outset, Vlaams Belang has argued in favor of the underground choice, just like the citizens’ and entrepreneurs’ platform,” says Stefaan Sintobin of Vlaams Belang Brugge.
“Ten municipalities are involved in this file, including Bruges. Six of the ten mayors, including Dirk de Fauw, opt for the underground solution.”
“Mayors under pressure”
“Next Friday, the ‘fine fleur’ of the Flemish Government will come to Bruges for consultation with the 10 municipalities involved. The fact that Prime Minister Jambon, together with Ministers Crevits, Demir, Somers and Weyts, will come to Bruges does not bode well and indicates that the mayors will be put under heavy pressure.”
Party leader Stefaan Sintobin will ask mayor de Fauw at the municipal council of 29/8 to “stand firm and check the position of the entire council”.
Sintobin has also submitted a motion to the vote asking that the entire city council unanimously advise the Flemish Government to opt for the underground solution. “This motion must ensure that the pressure on the Flemish Government is increased,” said Sintobin.
