In that agreement, the US gave so-called exemptions from US sanctions for those who cooperated with Iran. But President Donald Trump withdrew the exemptions in 2020 after unilaterally canceling the treaty in 2018.

In Vienna, the US, Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and Iran are currently negotiating the recovery. The exemption from sanctions is seen as a crucial step in the final stage of those negotiations.
