According to a ministry official, it would be a technical step necessary to restore the 2015 nuclear agreement. In that agreement, the US gave so-called exemptions from US sanctions for those who cooperated with Iran. But President Donald Trump withdrew the exemptions in 2020 after unilaterally canceling the treaty in 2018.
When Joe Biden became president, he put restoration of the nuclear weapons treaty with Iran high on his agenda. In Vienna, the US, Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and Iran are currently negotiating the recovery. The exemption from sanctions is seen as a crucial step in the final stage of those negotiations.
