The European Championship ticket has been bought, now it’s a matter of honour: The German U21 national team goes into their last European Championship qualifier on Tuesday in Poland with the chance of revenge.
“I don’t have to say much to the lads, they already know what’s going on themselves,” said DFB coach Antonio Di Salvo before the game in Lodz (6 p.m. / ProSieben MAXX) and was thinking primarily of the hearty 0:4 in the first leg.
“We definitely want our revenge,” said Angelo Stiller from TSG Hoffenheim. In addition, the game still has sporting value: Israel is hoping for at least a draw by the German team in order to be able to oust Poland from second place in Group B and reach the playoffs.
“It’s not an experimental game,” said Di Salvo, whose team, aside from losing at home to Poland in November, has had a spotless qualifier so far. “And that’s the way it should go,” says Stiller.
Jamie Leweling (suspicion of torn ligaments), Ansgar Knauff (strain) and Marton Dardai (flu infection), who all played in the 4-0 win over Hungary in Osnabrück on Friday, will not travel to Lodz.
