The kiosk on the Markt has long heated up emotions in Sint-Oedenrode. Did the old nostalgic version have to make way for a modern new one? After a long series of participation rounds, discussions and a signature campaign, the inhabitants have now decided.
It all started with parking in the center. The Market was mainly full of cars and that had to be reduced. At the same time, the square was also in need of a major makeover. So it was time to overhaul the center and the kiosk became one of the hottest irons. In the center of the square, it has stood out for more than seventy years.
An earlier survey showed that the residents of Rooien want a kiosk to remain. The only question was whether that should be the current one or a new modern version.
Signature action
During the first consultation round, a new modern kiosk was chosen. But there was a lot of criticism because there was no possibility to vote for the old kiosk. So a signature campaign was launched to be able to opt for the preservation of the old kiosk. Nearly 3,000 people supported the petition.
This was followed by public consultation round number two. For three evenings, residents of Rooien were allowed to vote on designs for a new kiosk. Or choose to leave the old kiosk. After the count it turned out that 1200 people preferred the old kiosk. And so Sint Oedenrode will get a refurbished Market and, after much discussion and participation, the kiosk will remain as it is now. This has been decided by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the municipality of Meierijstad.
Accessibility
“The council respects this result and implements it,” says alderman Jan van Burgesteden. “The result is now that the current kiosk remains and that nothing is changed, despite the fact that it does not meet conditions such as accessibility for everyone and functionality. Apparently, the residents of Rooi find these aspects less important than emerged during the consultation rounds. .”
