After burglaries in Groningen and Friesland, the thieves’ guild also struck several BMWs in Drenthe. So far, there have been three cases in our province in which thousands of euros worth have been stolen from cars in a clever manner.
After reports mainly came from the municipality of Westerkwartier in Groningen since January 19, the wave of burglaries among BMWs seems to be moving. In addition to a theft in Roden, the last two burglaries were committed in Assen.
The police suspect that an internationally operating gang is responsible for the thefts. Their method consists of making a hole in the car door, near the electric window. Then they can lower the window and steal to their heart’s content. “They can quickly capture valuables,” said a spokesperson.
The stolen property includes the dashboard, steering wheel, media and navigation equipment and the airbag. The total damage per car often exceeds 10,000 euros. The car thieves use specialist tools. The police do not say what exactly this consists of.
The police advise people to park their cars indoors or in a well-lit place. “Always remove your valuables from the car and always lock your car.”
