Tram pulls onto the street and cars are stuck in traffic

Due to work on the U2, it will be tight on Berliner Straße in Pankow until the end of October.

In rush-hour traffic, this message now has a regular place in the traffic warnings: traffic jam on Berliner Straße in Pankow. Stop and go, one lane!

Anyone who trundles past rubs their eyes angrily: Tracks are being laid on the left-hand lane of asphalt. So the tram is about to move! Does that have anything to do with the traffic turnaround announced by the Senate?

No, but the tram must be at a distance from the parallel underground line 2.

The M 1 and M 50 will therefore have to run over the temporary track between Westerlandstraße and Wisbyer Straße until the end of October. Because the construction workers need a safe place for the upcoming work on the subway.

They’re overdue! BZ reader Jürgen Brandt (75) has long been annoyed by the desolate sight of the ramp on which line 2 rolls between the Schönhauser Allee and Vinetastraße stations. The clinker cladding that was not so old was removed in most places. Underneath you can see porous concrete. “A terrible sight,” complains the pensioner.

When the BVG found out two years ago that the bricks were loose, they removed a large area as a precaution. Out of concern that they would fall off by themselves – you didn’t want to take any chances. It is now being renovated and rebuilt.

What does that mean for tram passengers? No trips in this area from February 21st to March 6th – accessible buses will be used instead:

► for the M 1 during the day between Eberswalder Strasse and Pankow Church, at night to Schillerstrasse.

► For the M 50 between Pankow Church and Björnsonstrasse.

And will the holes in the ceiling of the Vinetastraße subway station finally be plugged as part of the renovation? They were drilled after water damage.

BVG spokesman Jannes Schwentu to the BZ: “In the Vinetastraße underground station there is an older damage that has been partially renovated. The cause may be under the tram tracks, so it is difficult to localize. The holes remain open for control purposes for the time being. While this doesn’t look good, it doesn’t compromise security. We check the condition regularly.”
