Healthy diets and myths: that's why it's not just about weight

Body positivity: accept yourself to be happy

«In terms of body positivity, I have a moderate position, in that I am not in favor of extremisms. I don’t agree with who, albeit with the best intentions, tends to take the concept to extremes up to not take into account the health of our body in any way. On the other hand, I don’t even share diet culture that she was inculcated in us and that we all grew up with. My position is summed up in my motto “Let’s accept each other without ceasing to improve”. It means accept and love each other as we would love a dear friend, with her strengths and weaknesses, but also never stop trying to improve ourselves. I think that wanting the best for ourselves, without extremes, is an indication of the fact that we love each other and having a good relationship with our body is essential to live peacefully and, ultimately, to be happy “, underlines Carlotta Gagna also in her book,” Traininpink – Fitness for all (yes, for you too!), published by Mondadori.

We can’t spend our lives on a diet

“In 2019 I conducted an” experiment “on Instagram: for 30 days I ate ice cream every night, recording my weight the next morning and showing it in stories. I wanted to demonstrate, in a very clear way, several important notions about nutrition and about our body. The first is that it is not by completely depriving ourselves of the things we like that we achieve our physical goals: eating “healthy” also means eat sustainably over time. We can’t spend our lives on a diet. With some little foresight, better if followed by a professional, we can insert the foods we like from time to time in our diet and at the same time being able to lose weight or “tone up” », underlines the expert.

Weight fluctuations

“Our weight also fluctuates constantly every day and also during the day for many different reasons. Eg, during the infamous “precycle” it is perfectly normal to see ours weight on the scale rise due to retention typical of this period of the month. But that doesn’t mean we got fat. For this reason there is no point in weighing yourself every day. The fact that the weight on the scale goes up or down overnight very often does not mean that we have gained or lost weight. So the number we see on the scale must definitely be taken with pliers and, if we are following a path of weight loss, it is more interesting to take pictures. Thus, it will be possible to see how the body changes over time. Often, in fact, this change, especially in a toning process in which we remove fat mass and gain muscle mass, is not reflected in the weight on the scale », continues Carlotta Gagna.
