Alicante (dpa) – The track cycling world champion Amy Pieters, who is in an artificial coma, will be transported to her home in the Netherlands for further treatment, said her team SD Worx.

The 30-year-old fell badly while training in Alicante, Spain, on December 23 and was put into a coma after an operation. According to the team announcement, Pieters is now breathing independently, there have been no further changes to the state of health. Further information could only be given after the wake-up process.

In the past few years, Pieters and Kirsten Wild have won the world championship title in two-man team driving three times, most recently two months ago in Roubaix, France. At the Olympics in Tokyo, they both missed a medal in fourth place.
