Top golfer Nicolas Colsaerts is struggling with rare kidney disease: ‘A trip I wouldn’t wish on anyone’ | Sport

“Over the past few weeks, I’ve been on a journey that I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” said the Belgian Bomber, seen in his video message in a hospital bed at the Mediclinic Parkview Hospital in Dubai. “I went to see my doctor with swollen ankles, and that same day I was admitted to the hospital. They found fluid in one of my lungs, multiple blood clots in the lungs, but there was still no diagnosis. It was one of the most frightening days of my life. I looked my wife in the eye and told her I wasn’t ready to go yet.”

He continues: “A few days after blood clots were found in my lungs, I was actually going to take a flight,” Colsaerts continued. “I don’t have to draw a picture about what could have happened.”

Rare kidney disease

Colsaerts talks about his illness. “After almost a week in the hospital, I was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called primary membranous nephropathy. My body is actually attacking my kidneys, causing severe protein loss, among other things.”

Colsaerts is now being treated for the disease. “Now I am here on the first day of my treatment. We have to hope that my body responds to this treatment. It will take a few weeks or even months before we know whether this is successful,” concluded Colsaerts, who thanked the doctors and his wife.
