In 2021, the New England Patriots drafted Mac Jones in the first round. The young quarterback was set to inherit from NFL legend Tom Brady. But the former Alabama Crimson Tide playmaker failed to live up to expectations. An insider is now reporting that Jones is about to be eliminated from the Pats.
When Tom Brady left the New England Patriots in 2019, there was a big hole in the team’s quarterback position from the AFC.
In the following NFL season, the franchise tried Cam Newton, who, however, never knew how to please. Therefore, the Patriots around coaching legend Bill Belichick decided to sign a playmaker talent over the draft.
There, the Patriots selected Mac Jones in 15th place. Previously, he had caused a stir at the Alabama Crimson Tide for four years. The quarterback from Florida won the college championship twice with his team.
But the 24-year-old has not been able to repeat his college successes with the Patriots. After convincing in his rookie season with 22 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions, the second NFL year was a clear step backwards for his career.
NFL: Does Mac Jones have to leave the New England Patriots?
The Patriots are now even willing to listen to trade offers for Jones, insider Albert Breer revealed on The Sports Hub’s radio show. “I think Belichick has a clear idea of how a franchise quarterback should behave. And he didn’t like that at all with Jones,” said the sportswriter.
The relationship between the two suffered greatly as a result of these events, Breer continued.
With Bailey Zappe, the Patriots also have another young quarterback who was able to draw attention to himself with good performances last season. Breer speculates that he will henceforth take on the role of playmaker.
“I’m very unsure if they even see a big difference between the two. I’m not saying that they’re both equally good, but I think Zappe already had a small advantage last year in a way,” he noted “NBC” reporter.
