From the dunes to Twente, Dutch nature is suffering from a growing shortage of lime. The main cause is acidification of the soil, caused by decades of nitrogen pollution. Nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and potassium have been washed away as a result, causing many plants and animals to deteriorate.
