Tips from our readers: beautiful destinations for hiking | To travel

Walking is incredibly popular in corona time. If you want to go a little more adventurous, go for a hike. This requires more physical effort and is done in nature, as opposed to a walk that can also take place in the city.

We received an email from experienced hiker Robert Terpstra with various tours that he recommends. Last year he did a number of hikes in Crete that he will not soon forget, including a trip through the Patsos Gorge, between Rethymnon and Plakias. “A surprising gorge, a lot of climbing and clambering.”

His favorite destination is Jordan where he walked the Wadi Ghuweir Trail. “You hike there between high rock walls carved out by the water and after two hours you end up in a green oasis. Highly recommended in the dry period from April to October.”

Then some practical tips for the novice hiker. Comfortable shoes with a good profile are important. It is also smart to wear layers of clothing and always take a raincoat with you. Put enough water, snacks, a (head) light and a first aid kit in the backpack.

Height

We think the best route for a hike is around Lake Louise in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, because of the height differences and exceptional views.

Gap

This year I did the Wadi Ghuweir Trail in Jordan, through a beautiful gorge that has not yet been discovered by the general public. A journey of 15 kilometers that took me about five hours. Jordan surprised me.

Pause

As a novice hiker, I think the Black Forest in Germany is a great destination. You will find plenty of (multi-day) routes with a challenge because of the hills, but also enough places to take a break.

Is called

I once walked part of the Israel National Hiking Trail. It is wise not to go there in the summer months, because then it is very hot.

Lakes

The Seven Lakes Valley hike through the Triglav National Park in Slovenia is the most beautiful I have ever done. The route goes along seven lakes and rivers, through an impressive mountain landscape. For the beginner it is nice that you could also walk the route in a day.
