He seemed as good as gone because both Sonny Kittel and HSV seemed to be aiming for a change of offensive player. After five goals by the 30-year-old in the last six games, that has apparently changed, at least from the point of view of Hamburg.
Coach Tim Walter now campaigned for the Giessen native to stay, whose contract expires at the end of the season. In winter there was already a premature change in the room, for which HSV had also given the go-ahead. Now declared Walter (quoted via “Picture“): “Sonny is a great person and footballer. That’s why it’s always desirable that we keep such players with us.”

The coach explained the situation with Kittel, who scored his first brace since February last year in the 5-1 win in Regensburg on the previous day: “It’s always a common thing. I think Sonny feels very comfortable here.” Kittel has been on the Elbe since 2019, is the second most frequently used player in the second division history of the “Rothosen”, contributed the second most goals during this time and provided the most assists.
