Three more corona cases – DHB withdrawal no longer ruled out – Handball EM – handball

“We have learned in the past few days how quickly the situation can change. We will have to assess this new situation together.”, said Mark Schober, CEO of the German Handball Federation (DHB), in a press release.

Heymann, Steinert and M’Bengue affected

The DHB also announced that the new corona cases were backcourt player Sebastian Heymann, the best DHB shooter to date Christoph Steinert (17 goals) and tournament debutant Djibril M’Bengue. In addition, an unnamed member of the functional team became infected. This increases the number of active cases in the German team to twelve.

A conference between the DHB and the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) is scheduled for Wednesday evening (01/19/22) to discuss the new situation. “We will coordinate with the DHB, discuss the situation and decide together. The question is whether it still makes sense to leave the team in Bratislava.”, said HBL President Uwe Schwenker.

Schwenker: “Loading unlimited players makes little sense”

However, the official confirmed a possible withdrawal “with all calm and objectivity” to discuss. “You can’t just leave. The following applies to me: Good is faster. At the moment you have to make sure that the chain of infection doesn’t break. Unfortunately, our European Championship team is a reflection of society. But now, endlessly loading players from the Bundesliga does the trick little sense”, added Schwenker.

There are currently 25 DHB players in Bratislava. According to the current status, for the main round start against European champions Spain on Thursday (6 p.m./sports show and live ticker) but only 13 of them operational.
