The week of Drenthe: train strike, teacher shortage and Ter Apel

This week is also unavoidable. Nitrogen is again in the Drenthe news. But it wasn’t all nitrogen this week. Trains that do not run, the crisis at Ter Apel, flowers and the teacher shortage also passed by.

But the week starts with nitrogen. 36 scientists from eight universities wrote in a letter to the Dutch newspaper Trouw that we know more than enough to tackle the nitrogen crisis. They are outraged that the scientific basis of nitrogen policy is constantly being questioned. Among the 36 scientists are some scientists from Drenthe.

Doctors Without Borders will help in Ter Apel. Several hundred asylum seekers sleep outside there every night. It is the first time that MSF offers medical assistance in the Netherlands.

In addition, there were no NS trains in the Northern Netherlands on Wednesday due to a staff strike. And in Eelde they are preparing for the flower parade, but there are also worries there. Because after two years of corona, the drought is the great plague this time.

There are also concerns in education. The schools will start again tomorrow, but not all vacancies have been filled at the schools yet. Schools are eagerly looking for teachers. The problem occurs in both primary and secondary education. In secondary education, the schools in Drenthe are now working together on a solution.
