The Senate agreed on the abolition of Nazarbayev’s chairmanship in the Security Council

The Senate of Kazakhstan adopted amendments abolishing the life-long chairmanship of the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in the Security Council and the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. Earlier, the amendments were approved by the deputies of the Mazhilis, the head of state has the last word.

In the summer of 2019, Nazarbayev left the presidency of his own free will and transferred powers to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. But then he retained the posts of head of the Security Council and chairman of the ruling Nur Otan party. However, turning to the residents of Kazakhstan after unrest, Elbasy said that now Tokayev has full power, is the head of the Security Council and will soon be elected chairman of Nur Otan.
