The President of Italy called the reasons for his re-election

The coronavirus pandemic and the crisis in the socio-economic sphere of Italy became the reasons for the re-election of President Sergio Mattarella. About this he declared on the air of the Rai News channel.

Sergio Mattarella re-elected President of Italy for a second term

Earlier, Mattarella won the eighth round of the presidential election. The previous seven ended in vain. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi asked the President to agree to re-election for the “good and stability of the state.” According to Senate member Julie Unterberger, Mattarella, 80, had previously said he had “other plans for the future,” but, given the current situation, agreed to be re-elected for a second term.

Former prime minister of the country and leader of the Forward Italy! Silvio Berlusconi has previously withdrawn from the elections his candidacy proposed by his supporters in the centre-right coalition. He stressed that the necessary unity of political forces in the country can only be achieved “around Mattarella.”

Mattarella’s current term as head of state ends on February 3. The President of Italy is elected for seven years.
