The PDECat will vote ‘yes’ to the labor reform and the Government is waiting for UPN

The PDECat will vote in favor of the labor reform. A few hours before Congress debates the pact reached between employers and unions, the Government has managed to tie four more yeses and secure 174 supports, compared to 173 votes against. The support of the postconvergents, which was already expected in the Executive, thus brings the approval of the norm closer with the support of Ciudadanos and several minority parties. Even so, the direction of the vote of the two deputies of UPN that will end up tipping the balance.

“The proposal that we have on the table is a proposal that incorporated our electoral program: modify the 2012 labor reform based on dialogue with the social partners. (…) This is a capital, significant element,” said the PDECat spokesperson in Congress, Ferran Bel. Although he has said that he does not agree with the entire norm, he has pointed out that he sees “positive“Many of the aspects that are modified, such as the prevalence of the sectoral agreement compared to that of the companies or the ultra-activity of the agreements.

In addition, he has claimed that there are many other aspects of the reform approved by the Government of Mariano Rajoy in 2012 that will remain in force and with those who agree, as they already expressed that year when supporting the norm in Congress. “That 2012 reform has not been as perverse as some have tried to make believe over the last few years“, he pointed out.

“The only formation that voted for the previous labor reform and will vote for the current labor reform is us and the only deputy who voted and will vote will be me and I feel consistent, what cannot be understood is the absolutely demagogic position of the PP, irresponsible of a party that intends to govern,” Bel argued.

In this sense, he has denounced that the non-approval of the labor reform would be “a fatal blow to social dialogue, unprecedented”; a “absolute instability in the labor market in the process of economic recovery”; and the “Failure to comply with the commitments of the Spanish State as a whole within the framework of the EU and consequently it would paralyze the delivery of European funds”. After conscientiously arguing the meaning of his vote, Bel has pointed out that he “trusts” that this Thursday the labor reform will go ahead.

The only vote that remains to be known is that of the Unión del Pueblo Navarro, an allied formation of the PP in the Parliament of Navarra. His abstention would be enough to carry out the vote with more ‘yes’ (174) than ‘noes’ (173), although the norm would come out by the minimum and the error of any deputy could destroy it. The favorable vote of UPN would give the Government a more comfortable result, within the tightness of overcoming a vote by three more votes.
