The Last Journey of a Berlin Boy (18)

It was a moving farewell to silence and tears. The funeral service for Kaan Ö. († 18) from Lichterfelde. It was held in the Sehitlik Mosque on Columbiadamm in Neukölln.

In addition to family and friends, many Turks who had found out about the death of the likeable 18-year-old also came. A total of 500 mourners attended.

The Imam said the prayer for the dead. The coffin was then carried away and later taken to the airport. Kaan O. is to be buried in his father’s home near Ankara.

Meanwhile, other reasons for his death came to light. “It’s so tragic,” says Taha (21) – a good friend of Kaan’s. “It’s about a girl,” he says. “She and Kaan broke up, but a mutual friend felt they belonged together.”

So this acquaintance with fake social media accounts sent messages to his former girlfriend on behalf of Kaan, hoping they would reconnect.

But Kaan’s ex-girlfriend already had a new partner, who did not hide the messages supposedly written by Kaan. “He demanded that Kaan come to Schöneberg to turn himself in,” says Taha.
But Kaan refused because it wasn’t his emails. Only when the new friend threatened to find him everywhere did Kaan agree to the meeting. That was last Sunday, one o’clock in the morning.

“They came with several men,” says Taha. “It was agreed on a man-to-man fight.” Kaan won, then stabbed his opponent out of anger in the dark. “Kaan was sitting on the table tennis table,” said the friend. “He didn’t feel the stitches.” 30 minutes later, he quieted down, cried, and died.

Kaan, who wanted to study medicine, is now admired by many young men in his neighborhood. Because he died a man of honour. That makes Taha angry.

“Young people are so stupid,” says Kaan’s buddy and emphasizes: “Come home healthy. Be there for your family. And don’t get involved in such madness.”
