The incidence of coronavirus in Moscow will double

The incidence of COVID-19 in Moscow will double this week, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at a meeting of the Presidium of the Coordinating Council under the Government of the Russian Federation to combat coronavirus. The broadcast was hosted by the media platform “Looking”.

He confirmed that the Omicron strain is actively spreading in the city, and recalled that the severity of the disease caused by this variant is less, so the number of hospitalizations is still practically not growing. At the same time, the mayor believes that the number of hospitalized people will sooner or later begin to increase, since Omicron is highly contagious.

Speaking about the measures taken by the city authorities in connection with the aggravation of the epidemiological situation, Sobyanin said that the self-isolation regime for the elderly was being extended, from January 18, restrictions on remote work of 30% of employees of enterprises and organizations would be extended.

“As long as the healthcare system is coping, we will not introduce additional restrictions in Moscow,” the mayor said. He added that new restrictions will only be planned based on the situation with the overload of the healthcare system.

In this regard, Sobyanin said that in the last week alone, the number of calls to the capital’s polyclinics had doubled. “This week, I think, this doubling will double again. Practice will show how it will be in the coming weeks. But it is obvious that the load on polyclinics will be simply colossal,” predicted the head of the Moscow government.

For his part, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at the meeting that an action plan had already been developed in case of an increase in the incidence of coronavirus. He called be prepared for any development of events.
