Hollywood screenwriters have been on strike for more than 70 days now, with film industry workers joining the union at midnight US time.
New York Times – according to the newspaper, the leaders of the actors’ union (SAG-AFTRA) gathered for the final strike vote on Thursday, July 13. The meeting was organized because negotiations on new contracts with big studios and streaming services have not progressed.
President of the trade union Fran Drescher briefly commented on the situation at the press conference.
– The eyes of the whole world, and especially of the workforce, are on us. What happens to us is important because it also happens in the entire industry. If employers put Wall Street and greed first, forgetting about its key workers who keep the machine running, we have a problem, Drescher said.
This is the first major work stoppage for actors in 40 years and the first in 63 years for the entire industry. When the strike goes into effect, Hollywood shuts down completely, meaning that film and series productions are delayed. The writers’ strike alone put favorite series on hold The Last of Us, Emily in Paris and Stranger Things productions.
The goal of the trade union is to negotiate, among other things, increases in the fees that the Actors receive for reruns and views of streaming services. Actors are also concerned about the increased use of artificial intelligence.
