The endless central defender question at Bayern

Numerous transfer rumors and staff discussions have been part of daily business around FC Bayern for decades. Currently, there are speculations about the future occupation in central defense. While Niklas Süle should aim to leave, Antonio Rüdiger and Matthias Ginter are considered his potential successors. But there doesn’t seem to be a lot of substance behind the speculations (yet).

It is well known that FC Bayern has a preference for German national players. The record champions guide DFB professionals from home and abroad to the Isar again and again. Therefore, the ongoing rumors about the alleged interest in Antonio Rüdiger and Matthias Ginter are not surprising.

On the contrary: The two defenders would be available for free transfer in the summer, which makes them particularly interesting – also for FC Bayern.

While Ginter’s departure from Borussia Mönchengladbach has already been decided, Rüdiger is still playing poker with Chelsea for a new working paper. The longer the negotiations drag on, the more clubs are associated with the 28-year-old.

Bayern are behind at Rüdiger and Ginter?

In addition to FC Bayern, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus Turin in particular should feel at home with Rüdiger. The native of Berlin, who is said to have high salary demands, would like to remain silent until his final decision.

In terms of sport, Rüdiger would certainly be a good fit for FC Bayern, as the former Stuttgart player has developed into a top performer with international stature at Chelsea FC under coach Thomas Tuchel. According to the latest media reports, however, Rüdiger should prefer a move to Real Madrid.

At Ginter, too, Bayern are currently only said to have outsider opportunities. “Bild” football boss Christian Falk recently reported that Inter Milan are in pole position with the Gladbach professional. According to the Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, however, the Italian champion is “reserved” at Ginter.

FC Bayern is waiting for Süle’s decision

The further course of action of FC Bayern will ultimately depend on Niklas Süle’s personality. The 26-year-old’s contract ends at the end of the season. Coach Julian Nagelsmann has repeatedly emphasized in the past that he likes to work with the ex-Hoffenheimer.

Although FC Bayern Süle is said to have already shown several options for an extension, the defender is hesitant with his decision. According to “Sport Bild”, those in charge of Munich are therefore expecting a change in the central defender, who is attracted by a commitment in the Premier League.

Regardless of Süle’s future, FC Bayern should continue to rely on Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernández in the defense center. The two French have their regular place under coach Nagelsmann despite sometimes fluctuating performance. With Tanguy Nianzou, the Munich team still has a top talent in their own ranks who will certainly insist on more playing time in their third season with the record champions.

How is FC Bayern planning with Nianzou?

A commitment from Rüdiger or Ginter would, however, slow down Nianzou’s development. Thus, FC Bayern must also ask itself whether a seasoned professional really needs to be produced in the event of Süle leaving, or whether the 19-year-old Frenchman could take on a bigger role instead.

A real tendency is not yet apparent in the endless central defender question, the current rumors about Säbener Straße are too opaque. Accordingly, the Bundesliga clubs are likely to continue speculating for weeks.

After all, FC Bayern doesn’t have to get used to this fact.
