The Argentine labor movement calls for its first strike to stop the Milei projects

The Argentine summer will be flamboyant due to political issues. The Argentine labor movement has called on January 24 to a 12-hour strike against the far-right Government and its radical program of economic, regulatory and social changes. The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and the Central of Argentine Workers (CTA) decided to accelerate their fight plan after the president Javier Milei refer to Parliament an ambitious law more than 600 articles that grant the Executive powers to legislate in fact, going beyond the natural parliamentary sphere. The program includes severe sanctions for those who protest in public spaces. The call to strike represents in fact a challenge to the project of carrying out a conservative revolution. “They are taking us to pastoral Argentina,” the CGT warned in that sense.

The newspaper The nation remembered that nNever before since democratic institutions were recovered, four decades ago, has a head of state had to face a measure of force of that nature so quickly.. “Until now, the president who suffered the earliest union rejection measure was the radical Fernando de la Rúa (1999-2001). At that time, the CGT had only 77 days of the Alliance government to undertake its first strike. “. The data, added the publication, “takes on greater magnitude when it is compared with another striking record. Despite having countless negative economic indicators, Alberto Fernández’s management (2019-2023) was the only one that since 1983 has not suffered any strike by the union centers”.

Héctor Daer, one of the general secretaries of the CGT, hegemonized by Peronism, currently in the opposition, assured that the strike was decided “unanimously” due to the “non-constitutional” nature of the laws proposed by a Government that previously announced a Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) that seeks to deregulate the economy, cut labor rights, including the right to strike, enable the sale of land to foreigners and privatize state companies. “There is neither need nor urgency to appear with so many articles that turn the administrative matrix of our country upside down.”
