Tesla Cybertruck: Start of production postponed again – but two versions announced

?? Tesla’s Cybertruck is expected to come later
?? Start of production postponed to early 2023
?? Two variants expected – small and normal pickup

Cybertruck is supposed to come later

Tesla is again changing its plan to start production of the much-anticipated Cybertruck later this year. First production is now set to begin by the end of the first quarter of 2023, a person familiar with the project recently told Reuters. A small number of units are to be produced in Q1 2023 before series production is scheduled to start in the second quarter, as Reuters reports. So far, the Tesla website has said “You can finalize your configuration when production starts in 2022”. In the meantime, however, the part “in the year 2022” has been deleted. Tesla had already postponed the start of production to the end of 2022 for the first time last August.

Required design & engineering changes

According to Reuters, Tesla put off the new Cybertruck long enough to make important design and engineering changes. With this, the electric car manufacturer wants to create a convincing product in order to be able to keep up with the increasingly tough competition for e-pickups. Another reason for the postponement is said to be that production is to start at Tesla’s new Gigafactory in Texas. However, this will only be able to start production later this year, as the Model Y is to be built there beforehand. Last but not least, problems in the supply chain are likely to be to blame for the delays. “Oh man, this year has been a true supply chain nightmare and it’s not over yet,” Tesla boss Elon Musk tweeted at the end of November last year when asked about the cybertruck. In the course of this, Musk also announced an updated product roadmap, which will probably be presented at the earnings conference on January 26th.

Two new variants are planned

At the same time, other news has recently come to light. As Elon Musk explained at the end of 2019, it would make sense in the long term to add a smaller cybertruck to the product range, reports InsideEVs. Tesla fans hadn’t heard from the subject since then. Now, the automaker could unveil two versions of the cybertruck at a special event expected to take place in March, InsideEVs claims to have learned from well-known Tesla bull Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research. The two versions presented in March should have “significant improvements” compared to the first Cybertruck. Chowdhry was unable to give any further details, but the smaller Cybertruck is said to be around 15 to 20 percent smaller than the standard model.
