Suspect Assenaar stuck for longer in case of dead woman in roof box

The 52-year-old man from Assen, who is suspected of being involved in the death of a 37-year-old woman from Hungary, will be detained for two more weeks. The examining magistrate has just decided that. The man is in restrictions and therefore the Public Prosecution Service (OM) is not allowed to provide any further information.

The Assenaar was arrested Friday morning. The victim had been missing for a year, according to police. It is not yet known when she died. DNA testing must show that it is indeed this woman.

38 tips

Last Monday, the lifeless body of the woman was found in a roof box in the Oranje Canal near Orvelte. It had been thrown into the water the previous weekend. In the TV program Opsporing Verzocht, attention was drawn to the crime, which yielded 38 tips. The Assenaar was arrested on Friday morning.

Local residents have said that a witness saw the rear lights of a van last Saturday evening. An occupant of the van would have thrown something into the canal about 500 meters from the Orvelter Bridge, possibly the found suitcase. Drag tracks are clearly visible on the bank.

Dagblad van het Noorden reported last night that the woman is the suspect’s ex-partner. That has not yet been confirmed by the Public Prosecution Service.
