Strike at Düsseldorf airport: third of flights canceled | Abroad

A strike at baggage handler Aviapartner today causes disruption at Düsseldorf airport, in western Germany. Just over a third of the flights have been cancelled.

The trade union Verdi had called for a strike among the approximately 700 employees of Aviapartner, in which about 90 percent would participate. The handler missed a new contract at Düsseldorf Airport, which threatens all jobs there. According to Verdi, Aviapartner refuses to work out a social plan.

A total of 290 flights were scheduled for Friday, of which 101 were cancelled. Despite the canceled flights, according to a spokesman for Düsseldorf Airport, there was no chaos at the airport in the morning, because the companies had informed their travelers in time.
