Spengler Cup is canceled again

The traditional ice hockey tournament Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, is canceled again.

Due to several corona cases shortly before Christmas Eve in the team of host HC Davos, the event was canceled one day before the start on Saturday. The organizers announced that this was done after consulting the canton of Graubünden.

After a positive case in mid-December, all players and the support team were tested daily for the Sars-CoV-2 virus. “In addition to just one other individual case a few days ago, the majority of the team members’ tests from December 24th were positive,” said the organizers.

In addition to the home team, Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia), Frölunda HC (Sweden), Kalpa Kuopio (Finland), Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) and a selection from Bern were to compete from December 26th to 31st.

The Spengler Cup, which was first played in 1923, fell victim to the corona pandemic last year and will not take place for the sixth time after the most recent cancellation. The international invitation tournament is usually played annually around the turn of the year, mainly with club teams. Traditionally, a Canadian selection also takes part in the event, having won the last edition in 2019 for the 16th time. The last German tournament winner was the Kölner Haie in 1999.
