Speed skating: Nils van der Poel triumphs with an Olympic record – Olympia

Sven Kramer falls short of expectations

Speed skating superstar Sven Kramer entered the 5,000 meter stage at the Olympics for the last time. The 35-year-old won gold in Vancouver in 2010, in Sochi in 2014 and in Pyeongchang in 2018, over which he also became world champion eight times. No speed skater has been more successful in the 5000 meters.

In Beijing it wasn’t enough for the very front again. In the very first duel, Kramer had to play against the Norwegian Viktor Hald Thorup – and with a time of 6:17:04 minutes he fell short of expectations. Especially the last laps weren’t as fast as we knew him from earlier times. As a result, Kramer ended up ninth.
