Hamburger SV instead of the Bundesliga? Steffen Baumgart is said to be open to joining HSV after parting ways with 1. FC Köln.
According to “Sport Bild”, the 51-year-old is interested in moving to the North German second division club, regardless of their league affiliation. Accordingly, Baumgart doesn’t care that he could earn significantly more if he got another job in the upper house than in Hamburg.
Background; HSV has been the Rostock native’s favorite club since childhood. It is said that Baumgart will be extremely interested in leading the club back into the elite class of German football.
But: Tim Walter is still in office as head coach of the Rothosen. And there are said to be no talks between the HSV management around club boss Jonas Boldt and Baumgart. According to the report, there was also no contact in December, when Walter was on the rocks.
However, Baumgart was still under contract with 1. FC Köln until shortly before Christmas and was therefore unavailable for HSV at the time. However, given the disastrous first half of the season and the fall to 17th place, an amicable separation followed.
First 1. FC Köln, then HSV?
The personnel could then become hot if Walter does not manage to turn around the trend at HSV, which has also been weakening recently.
The opening program is tough for the former Bundesliga dinosaur: The second half of the season starts with the duel at FC Schalke 04, then Karlsruher SC travels to Hamburg, then the Hanseatic League has to play Hertha BSC.
Baumgart announced a possible lightning comeback in an “Bild” interview shortly after his release from 1. FC Köln. “I’m not setting myself a limit for a break. First I have to let everything sink in. I think at the end of January I could imagine being ready for something new again,” he said.
But he’s “not the type of person who just sits at home in the long run. Then my ass will itch and my wife will definitely say: ‘Go to work, you have to go out!'” says Baumgart.
