Spanish women’s league can start after strike

The referees’ strike in Spain’s Primera Division women’s soccer team has ended.

After the first day of the game had to be postponed due to the work stoppage last weekend, game operations can now begin.

As the organizers of the professional league LPFF announced on Wednesday evening, an agreement was reached in a meeting between the league and the referees employed by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Among other things, the remuneration of the officials was increased from 300 euros to 1,666 euros per game.

The referees had previously announced in a statement from the association that “under the conditions of our professional and economic situation, they would not referee a game in the women’s Primera Division”. They called for higher wages and “working conditions approaching those of men’s premier league”.

The season will now open on Saturday when reigning champions FC Barcelona meet UDG Tenerife.
