Sinterklaas comes early for Jos: he feels like a miller again

A year and a half is not an eternity, but miller Jos van Schooten of De Eenhoorn in Schalkwijk thought it looked suspiciously similar. So he was overjoyed when the new rods, a vital element of the blades, ‘finally’ arrived this afternoon. Once this part has been installed in place of the old rods in two weeks, Jos can be what he prefers to be again: a miller.

The Eenhoorn stood still for eighteen months due to outdated blades. Allowing it to run any longer was irresponsible. Nevertheless, Jos van Schooten was often there. But working in a sawmill that doesn’t cut felt strange. He counted down the days. When ‘De Emmeloord’ moored around 1 p.m. and the rods were hoisted ashore, he breathed a sigh of relief: ”Finally they are here. What a beautiful moment.”

The installation of the new rods will take another fourteen days, but the end is in sight: Jos will soon be able to saw again. And not just in the coming weeks or months, but for about thirty years, because that’s how long the new rods last. “A nice prospect,” says Jos.
